The quick answer
If your material is already a document — PDFs, slides, papers, pasted notes — use NotebookLM. It is free, it handles 50 sources in one notebook, and asking questions across all of them at once is something we do not attempt. We would rather tell you that than waste your afternoon.
If your material is a lecture, use VideoNoteGPT. Three things decide it: NotebookLM cannot record, it will not take a video file, and its flashcards stay inside NotebookLM. If you need to capture the class you are sitting in, or you revise in Anki, those are hard blocks rather than preferences.
Most honest summary: NotebookLM is a research assistant that reads your sources. VideoNoteGPT is a lecture recorder that produces study material. The overlap is real but smaller than it looks, and plenty of students run both.

Where NotebookLM is genuinely better
Saying "we win everything" would be easy and useless. Four places it beats us outright:
- Many sources at once. Fifty documents in one notebook, questions answered across all of them with citations back to the source. We summarize one lecture at a time.
- Documents. Feed it a textbook chapter, three papers and your slides and it will hold them together. That is its home ground.
- Audio Overviews. The two-host generated discussion is a genuinely novel way to revise, and nothing we make is quite like it.
- Price. It is free, from Google, with nothing to count. Ours is 3 lectures a day, also with nothing to count.
If those describe your week, use NotebookLM. We would rather you got your work done.
The three things NotebookLM cannot do for you
1. It cannot record the lecture you are in
NotebookLM works from sources you already have. If you are sitting in a hall right now, it has nothing to read. VideoNoteGPT records in the browser — press record, press stop, and the recording becomes your notes. Nothing to install, nothing to transfer off a phone.
2. It cannot take the lecture itself — only a link to one
NotebookLM pulls a YouTube video's existing transcript. No captions, no notes — and uploaded lecture recordings, conference talks and older course videos frequently have none. We should be straight about this: from a YouTube link, our Chrome extension also reads the caption track, so a video with no captions at all is out of reach for both of us that way. The difference is the second route. Hand VideoNoteGPT the recording — made in the browser or uploaded as a file — and Whisper transcribes the audio, so captions never enter into it. NotebookLM takes audio uploads but not video files, and cannot make the recording in the first place.
3. Its flashcards do not leave NotebookLM
NotebookLM generates flashcards you review inside NotebookLM. If your revision already lives in Anki — as it does for most medical, nursing and pharmacy students — that is a wall. VideoNoteGPT exports a real .apkg file: lecture in, deck in your collection, scheduled alongside everything else you are already reviewing.
If you use Anki, this is usually the whole decision. A tool that cannot put cards in your collection is a tool you will stop opening by week three.

Is NotebookLM free?
Yes, and properly free — core features work with any Google account: study guides, flashcards, quizzes, mind maps, audio overviews. The free tier allows 100 notebooks, 50 sources each, 50 chat queries a day and 3 audio overviews a day. For many students that is enough, and we would rather say so.
Can NotebookLM record a lecture?
No. It reads sources you already have. To use it on a live lecture you would need to record with something else first, then upload — which is the step VideoNoteGPT removes.
Can I export NotebookLM flashcards to Anki?

Is VideoNoteGPT trying to replace NotebookLM?
